I spent my early years in Cornwall then trained at Guy’s Hospital In 1979, I was appointed consultant physician to the United Norwich Hospitals and spent the next 27 years developing diabetes and endocrine services in Norfolk. I retired from my full-time consultant post in 2006 but continue to work part-time as honorary consultant to the Norwich Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Programme.

After completing a diploma in photography and audio visual technology in 1992 Grant trained as a medical photographer at Aberdeen University Medical School. In 1994 he moved south to work in the medical illustration department at Wycombe General Hospital in High Wycombe where he became involved in ophthalmic photography. A further move to Epsom and St.Helier NHS Trust in Surrey in 1996 saw his time divided between the Roy Harfitt Eye Unit at Sutton Hospital and St. Helier hospital in Carshalton. At this point Grant began to focus on retinal photography and FFA of patients with diabetes. In 2001 Grant was employed by South West London Community NHS Trust to project manage the establishment of a diabetic retinopathy screening service at the Beta Cell Diabetes Unit in Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. This role included advising on the development of diabetic retinopathy screening at Kingston and Richmond & Twickenham PCTs.  At this time Grant developed, in conjunction with Roehampton University, a modular qualification in diabetic retinopathy screening and grading and has now taught more than 100 screeners currently working in the UK. In 2004 Grant was contracted to Hammersmith & Fulham PCT to develop an intermediate care centre for people with diabetes and later that year took up a post as clinical manager for the diabetic retinopathy screening service at Mayday Hospital in Croydon where he currently lives. Grant has been a member of council for the British Association of Retinal Screeners for 3 years and is involved in various national committees and expert reference groups involved with the development of education and registration of those working in the field of diabetic retinopathy screening. Grant is married with two children and his interests include playing football, cooking, reading and riding his motorcycle.

Jacqueline qualified as an Orthoptist from Moorfields Eye Hospital in 1977 and worked at St George’s hospital in London before becoming Head of Department at the North Middlesex Hospital. There she became involved in fundus photography and fluorescein angiography for the retinopathy clinic.
